Plum

The recommended plums or the Japanese or Japanese-hybrid varieties.  For our area the three recommended varieties are listed below.  You should plant at least two different varieties to insure proper pollination and consistent production from your trees.  The large-fruited European-type plums that commonly reach the supermarkets are not as well adapted here because of greater disease susceptibility and lower production.

Bruce

The Bruce Plum tree is a medium-sized tree, produces large amounts of brilliant wine-red fruits, large in size and excellent for canning.

The tree will 20 x 20 feet at maturity and needs another variety for pollination.

Methley

The Methley Plum Tree produces juicy, sweet, red flesh with a mild flavor. This early variety has reddish-purple skin and blood red flesh. The Methley plum tree is very attractive in appearance and vigorous. The Methley is self-fruitful so no pollinator is needed. This early variety has red-purple skin and soft, juicy, blood-red flesh. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and birds and the flowers are fragrant. It is drought-tolerant and is a regular bearer.

Plums are an excellent source of vitamin A and C, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and fiber. They are often used as a dried fruit and then referred to as a prune. They are also used to make one of the best tasting jellies or jams in the world.
