Nut Trees

Papershell Pecan

Any of the Indian varieties of papershell pecans will grow and produce well in East Texas, but experts and growers agree that Choctaw, Pawnee, and Desirable are the varieties most popular and best suited for this area.

To produce pecans these trees must be cross pollinated.  This means that you must have at least two trees of different varieties.   For these particular trees you must have at least one Choctaw and one Pawnee or one Choctaw and one Desirable to get dependable nut production.  The reason all trees get pollinated is that the Pawnee and Desirable will pollinate the Choctaw first.  Then, later in the season the trees will reverse roles and the Choctaw will pollinate the Pawnee and Desirable.

For the home orchard consisting of a few pecan trees most folks just plant one or two of several different varieties and let them do their thing.

Desirable

Protandrous (pollinator)

One of the larger pecans, excellent cracker, bears early and is a very heavy producer.  has a thinner shell than Success.  Disease resistant.  Protandrous.

An early-pollen-shedding variety. Desirable is an outstanding variety for the humid areas of east and south Texas and also produces well in central Texas. The tree grows fast but requires at least 8 to 10 years to bear 15 pounds of pecans. It has weak "V" limb angles which require training and its foliage is light green rather than a more attractive dark color. Scab resistance is moderate and can be controlled with fungicide sprays. Desirable is not an exceptionally heavy bearer, but as an older tree it is the most regular producer of crops of high quality pecans. 39 Nuts/lb; 54 percent kernel. (ag)
Very old commercial variety that still ranks high. Large pecans, of very good quality. Bears almost every year. Disease-resistant and somewhat weak-wooded in winds and ice. Foliage is medium green.

Pawnee

Protandrous (pollinator)

Mohawk-Starking Hardy Giant Cross.  Large nut. Early nut maturity and high kernel percentage.  Protandrous, mediocre scab resistant.

The Pawnee pecan tree is an excellent choice for people with limited space due to its relatively small size, only 30 feet tall and wide. Pawnee grows well from Georgia to Texas and is an exceptional pollinator. The nuts are large and sweet. The Pawnee has recently become one of the most popular papershell varieties for home and commercial orchards due to its numerous fine qualities.
