Magnolia

The various varieties that we carry are recommended for this area and are grown in three to seven gallon nursery pots at the nursery.  The recommended planting times for container grown trees is early spring and late fall.  This is also when we carry the largest selection of trees on site.

Magnolia "Jane"

This is a hybrid plant resulting from a cross between M. Kobus var. Stellata "Waterlily" and M. liliiflora "Reflorescens".  Magnolia grows best in a sunny location in rich, moist but porous soil.  It will tolerate poor drainage for only a short period of time.  Growth will be thin and leggy in a shady spot but part shade is acceptable.  Train plants early in their life to develop the desired form.

Diseases: Scales are the main problem on plants in the magnolia family.

More Information

Star Magnolia

The tree blooms at a young age, with the slightly fragrant 7–10 cm (3–4 in) flowers covering the bare plant in late winter or early spring before the leaves appear. There is natural variation within the flower color, which varies from white to rich pink; the hue of pink magnolias changes from year to year, depending on day and night air temperatures prior to and during flowering. The flowers are star shaped, with at least 12 thin, delicate petals—some cultivars have more than 30. The leaves open bronze-green, turning to deep green as they mature, and yellow before dropping in autumn. They are oblong and about 4 in (10 cm) long by about an 1.5 in (4 cm) wide.
