Basic Monthly To Do List

General Rose Care


This is a basic to do list for rose care broken down by Month and by Planting Zone.  It covers most of the basic things you should be doing to ensure healthy prosperous roses year after year.  

The purpose of the list is to get you off to a good start .... not make you a Master Rose Gardener.  Follow the list and do your homework and you will have some really nice roses to show off to your friends.

Clean, sharpen and disinfect all tools X X X X X X X X X X X
Deadhead faded flowers every couple of days or so                      
Mulch the entire bed to a depth of at least 3 inches                      
Supplement with a little liquid fertilizer when you water                      
Start up your regular spraying schedule                      
Continue with your regular spraying schedule                      
Time to fertilize

Don't forget to fertilize after you prune the roses                 X X X
This is the last time you fertilize for the year                      
Resume your normal watering schedule                 X X X
Water as needed - In zone 8 that could be every other day                      
Weed rose beds - mulch helps control weeds also                      
Stop deadheading                      
Protect those bushes from the coming winter                      
Remove winter protection and start waking them up                      
Get those new rose beds worked up for spring
